Article Topic: This article looks at the ancient ways of drilling beads and the processes involved in identifying the specimen as natural beryl variety aquamarine.
Gem Material: Natural Beryl variety Aquamarine Authors: Ronnie Bauer and Chris Payne Abstract from Article: ‘If one looks down the drill hole, one can see where the wire holding the crystal to the boot has elongated the hole. The primitive drilling techniques can also be observed. A metal rod tipped with corundum powder was hand rotated using a bow-like tool to slowly bore a hole. The workman stated on one side and then rotated the gem and repeating the process from the other side eventually striking the opposing hole.’
